REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY

Next Sunday will be the Remembrance Sunday 11 o’clock mass at St. Osmund.

The mass will be for those who died in the 2 world wars and all conflicts since.

FR. EMMANUEL CHUKWUJEKWU

Fr. Emmanuel Chukwujekwu will be moving in here on Saturday Nov. 22nd. I will celebrate the 5.30 mass that day and then Fr. Emmanuel will say the masses on Sunday 23rd and all days there after.

I am off to Rome on Sunday Nov. 23rd until Friday 28th.

Then I shall be retiring shortly after or thereabouts. Fr. Emmanuel will be doing the First confessions on the Wednesday and Thursday of that week.

He will be going back to Nigeria on Dec. 29th. Until Feb. 5th. So the weekend of Nov. 16th will be my last official weekend here.

I will say all my goodbyes before I go and I won’t be back as Fr. Emmanuel will be in charge

What An Experience!

A group of 16 of us from the Bolton community successfully completed this year’s Sahara Desert fundraising challenge in aid of the Bolton Hospice. So far the group has raised over £37,000 and with help from parishioners, family and friends, I was able to bring in just over £2500 of that!

It was 2 full days and 2 half days trekking through the Sahara Desert, guided by local Berbers and a lead from Different Travel which coordinates the actual hike in Morocco on behalf of the Hospice.

It was tough terrain and two days it heated up to 37 Celcius but all the preparation done by the Hospice team, our practice hikes over the past months and the advice from Different Travel meant we were prepared and able. The night skies were spectacular and we had a lot of fun during the trip to balance it all out.

It was absolutely wonderful and I’d recommend it as a great undertaking if anyone is interested. The Hospice holds it every year.

FATHER HEAKIN IS RETIRING

I was 75 in June and that is the mandatory retiring age in this diocese. Lot of moves taking place – I might still be here at Christmas!! Been a hold up in the moves and I will be replaced by Fr. Emmaneul Chukwujekwu.

He belongs to a religious order– HFFBY and is from Nigeria.

I have been here for eight and a half years and have enjoyed running the parish of St. Osmund and St. Teresa called Blessed Dominic Barberi.

CHURCH CLEANING at St. Osmund Tuesday, November 18th at 10am.

BAPTISMS Please speak first to Father Heakin after Sunday Mass. Parents must attend mass before a date can be agreed for baptism. Baptism preparation meetings take place once a month on a Wednesday evening at 7pm. The next meeting will be on November 19th.

SERIOUS PROBLEM: For a long time there were no buildings next to the hall since they demolished the school. Then they built new houses and they are very close to the hall. The first time we played music there, they rang up and asked us to turn the volume down. This has happened again, so I don’t know what the answer is . The walls of the hall are thin – no insulation to deaden the sound.

PARISH FOLK GROUP will play the guitars at 5.30 mass on Saturdays in 2025: November 22nd, December 13th.

ST. OSMUND HALL

Ukelele group -“Ukes like us“ will play in St. Osmund hall on Sunday November 16th. From 2-4 p.m. In aid of “Sam’s gift” – donations please to help support teenagers and young adults with cancer. Tea, coffee, cakes. All welcome.

Bolton hospice charity night on Saturday Nov. 22nd. Tickets on sale soon. £10 includes pastie and peas. Elvis is in the building for your entertainment! Tickets, ring David on 01204 533118

Christmas social at St. Osmund Sunday Dec. 7th. From 2-4.

RAFFLE PRIZES wanted for Christmas draw on Sunday December 7th in St. Osmund hall at the Christmas get celebration . From 2-4. £100 for first prize already donated—thanks.

FR. HEAKIN IS GOING TO ROME – From Sunday Nov. 23rd.—Friday 28th. I will be in Rome. All priests who are celebrating their 40th or 50th or 60th jubilee are invited to Rome by the Bishop’s conference as thanks for our hard work over 50 years. We attend the Papal audience on the Wednesday —we don’t meet the Pope personally but we are in V.I.P. area very close to him at the general audience. Then we go out on sight seeing trips around the Eternal City to see Castle Gondolfo, St. Paul Out side the Walls, The Pontifical Beda seminary, the Venerable English seminary.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS decided by St. Osmund social committee. Flatcappers concert. Irish dancing display with maybe an Irish dance night. Bolton Hospice fundraising night. Fish and chips some Friday lunch time. Coach trip—maybe to Skipton market which is open on Fridays. Hall is available for hire (as long as you don’t make too much noise and make the neighbours complain!!)
